Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks a group of substances called leukotrienes.
Make sure your child always uses this medicine exactly as the doctor or pharmacist has told you. Talk to your child's doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. This medicine should be given to children under adult supervision. Your child should take Montelukast granules every evening. It should be taken even if your child has no symptoms or if she/he has an acute asthma attack. For children from 6 months to 5 years: The recommended dose is one sachet of Montelukast 4 mg granules taken by mouth every evening. If your child is taking Montelukast granules, you must be sure that your child is not taking other medicines that contain the same active ingredient (montelukast). For children from 6 months to 2 years, Montelukast: Montelukast 4 mg granules are available: Montelukast 4 mg granules are available for children aged 2 to 5 years. Montelukast 4 mg granules are not recommended for children under 6 months. How should I give Montelukast 4 mg granules to my child: This medicine should be taken by mouth. The sachet is opened immediately before use. Montelukast granules can be given either: Directly in the mouth. Or mixed with a tablespoon of cold or room temperature soft food (eg applesauce, ice cream, carrot puree and rice). Mix Montelukast granules with a spoonful of cold or room temperature soft food. Make sure the entire dose is mixed with the food. Make sure the child takes the whole spoonful of granules/food at once (within 15 minutes). IMPORTANT: The granules/food mixture should not be stored for later use. Montelukast granules are not intended to be dissolved in liquid, but liquid can be taken immediately after the granules have been swallowed. Montelukast granules can be taken regardless of food intake.
