What Carbimazole is used for:

Do not take Carbimazole:

  • If you’re allergic to the active substance or any other component of this medicine.
  • If you have had a serious allergy to other anti-thyroid medications such as Thiamazole, Methimazole or Propylthiouracil.
  • If you have a serious blood disorder.
  • If you have severe liver problems.
  • If you had inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis) after administration of Carbimazole or Thiamazole in the past.

Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor about all your medical conditions before taking this medicine including:

  • If you have liver problems.
  • If you have decreased bone marrow activity (decreased number of blood cells).
  • If you are receiving radio-iodine treatment.
  • If you are pregnant, could be pregnant or could become pregnant.

Possible side effects:

  • Stop using this product and seek immediate medical help if you develop rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Serious side effects:

 

  • Allergic reactions
  • Swelling of lymph nodes
  • Swelling of glands in your mouth
  • Liver problems
  • Muscle pain


Other medicines and Carbimazole:

  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
  • Tell your doctor especially if you are taking:
  • Theophylline
  • Blood thinner such as Warfarin
  • Steroids
  • Erythromycin (antibiotic)
  • Digoxin
  • Beta blockers used for high blood pressure
  • Radio-iodine therapy


How to take Carbimazole :

  • This medicine is intended for adults and children aged 2 years and older.
  • Take as indicated by your doctor.
  • Take with or without food.

Adults:

  • the recommended starting dose is 20-60 mg given in 2-3 divided doses.
  • Once stable, the dose can be decreased to 5-15 mg daily.

Children:

  • the recommended starting dose is 15 mg daily.
  • Once stable, the dose is adjusted.
